BJD Slams “Double Engine” as Now a “Double Disaster”

  • After the death of 6 patients due to wrong injection, 108 ambulance services collapse in Odisha.
  • The BJP-led state government is celebrating its anniversary amidst a public healthcare crisis.
  • Instead of spending crores on celebration, the government should procure 1,000 new ambulances.

Bhubaneswar, 05/06/2025 – With the state’s healthcare system in a worrisome condition, the collapse of ambulance services has triggered sharp criticism from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD). The party has condemned the BJP-led Odisha government for celebrating its one-year anniversary at a time when critical emergency services like ambulances are failing.

In a press conference at Shankha Bhawan today, BJD senior general secretary Dr. LekhasriSamantsinghar stated that it is deeply tragic that the 108 ambulance service, a lifeline during medical emergencies, is practically defunct while the government spends taxpayer money on statewide celebrations.

Referring to a recent incident, Dr. Samantsinghar said, “Just yesterday, 6 patients lost their lives due to the administration of a wrong injection at Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College, Koraput. Today, we are witnessing a total collapse in ambulance services.” In Jagatsinghpur, a 108 ambulance carrying a patient and family broke down due to a burst tyre. Shockingly, the ambulance had no spare stepney tyre, and when the driver called the control center, no help was provided. The patient’s condition deteriorated further. Thankfully, local BJD MLAShri Sarada Prasad Jena arranged another vehicle to shift the patient to Erasama CHC.

Videos circulating on social media show multiple non-functional 108 ambulances parked in various parts of the state. The government, however, appears indifferent to this dire situation. According to Dr. Samantsinghar, these ambulances are not being repaired or maintained, resulting in their gradual breakdown.

She also recalled that it was former CM Naveen Patnaik who had launched the 108 ambulance service in Odisha and ensured its smooth functioning. But since the BJP assumed power, the service has deteriorated due to neglect and lack of maintenance, and many ambulances are now death traps on wheels.“Double Engine is Now Double Disaster”: Dr. Samantsinghar

Dr. Samantsinghar sharply criticized the BJP for coming to power in Odisha with the promise of “Double Engine, Double Development,” which she claimed has now turned into a “Double Disaster.” She added that while essential services are in collapse, the government is focused on extravagant celebrations, spending large sums from the state treasury.

She demanded an immediate cancellation of the anniversary celebrations and suggested that the money be used to procure at least 1,000 new emergency ambulances to save lives across the state.
