Bhubaneswar, 12/09/2025: The Biju Janata Dal today strongly criticized the State Government for its disastrous failure to address the ongoing fertilizer crisis that has left farmers across Odisha struggling in the peak of the agricultural season. Rejecting the State Government’s repeated claims of having adequate fertiliser stock, the BJD presented official data from the Cooperative Department to expose the false claim State Government and reality of severe shortages of fertilisers across Odisha.
Addressing the media at Shankha Bhavan, Party Vice President Shri Sanjay Das Burma and Chief Whip & MLA Smt. Pramila Mallik alleged that the Government had failed in its responsibility to regulate fertilizer availability, supply and curb black marketing. Shri Das Burma pointed out that while the Hon’ble Chief Minister continues to assert after every review meeting that the State has sufficient fertilizer stock, the ground situation tells a completely different story. He noted that Ganjam district received only 10,640 MT against a demand of 19,561 MT, Bhadrak district was provided barely 863 MT against a requirement of 6,188 MT, Balasore district was given just 900 MT against a need of 2,600 MT, and Angul district received 4,954 MT compared to an indent of 8,100 MT. He said the official figures clearly show that most districts have been supplied far less than their requirement, contradicting the Government’s narrative of sufficiency of stock. He added that this gap had already led to road blockades and agitations in several districts, which are being widely reported by the media, yet the Government continues to mislead the public instead of solving the problem.
Smt. Pramila Mallik emphasized that nearly 70% of Odisha’s population depends on agriculture for their livelihood, and the present shortage has left them in grave distress. She said that even though former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Shri Naveen Patnaik had written to the Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers seeking urgent intervention, no solution has emerged. She further expressed disappointment over non functionality of Talcher Fertilizer Plant even after seven years though it was promised to be functional within 36 months, depriving Odisha of a crucial source of fertilizers.
The BJD announced that it will stage a massive protest in front of Raj Bhavan on the 15th of this month demanding immediate action from the State Government. If the crisis persists, the party will intensify its agitation and take the protest to every block of the State, standing shoulder to shoulder with Odisha’s farmers in their fight for justice.
