Bhubaneswar, October 31, 2025 – In a landmark achievement for India’s power transmission sector, country’s first indigenously manufactured 220kV Mobile Gas-Insulated Switchgear (m-GIS) Systemwas delivered to Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID)by Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems (India) Private Limited (TTDI).
The launch reaffirms POWERGRID’s leadership in promoting technological innovation, standardization, and indigenization in India’s transmission network. The 220kV m-GIS System is designed and built fully in line with POWERGRID’s operational requirements.
The system was formally flagged off from TTDI’smanufacturing facility in Telangana, in the presence of Shri Vamsi Rama Mohan Burra (Director – Projects), Shri Rajil Srivastava (ED – Asset Management), and Shri Abhay Kumar (CGM-I/C Engineering).
Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) is a compact and highly reliable system used for safe and efficient high-voltage power distribution, especially in space-constrained environments.Recognizing the need for mobility and rapid response, POWERGRID played a pivotal role in conceptualizing and defining the technical contoursof a mobile GIS (m-GIS) solution.Developed and manufactured by TTDIunder POWERGRID’s initiative, the m-GIS offers rapid deployment and enhancesgrid flexibility, resilience, and disaster-readiness
The 220kV m-GIS meets POWERGRID’s stringent design, quality, and performance criteria, enables fast grid restoration, temporary power evacuation, and substation augmentation with minimal infrastructure and time. Itsmodular “Connect–Disconnect–Redeploy” feature ensures operational agility, making it a game-changer for handling emergency and flexible grid needs. The m-GIS solution is designed to accommodate on standard trailer dimensions and curated to meet the necessary electrical clearances and mechanical stresses during its transportation and deployment.
“We are proud to collaborate with POWERGRID in making this milestone possible and realize an indigenous solution to support the critical application and needs in EHV GRID network in India. Reinforcing our Make in India commitment, the delivery of the first-of-its-kind Mobile 220kV m-GIS Solution in India is aremarkableachievement forus. TTDI is at the forefront of providing special, unique and customized solutions to bring value to critical needs and unique applications of our customers. The m-GIS solution delivered to POWERGRID is fully customized and is adeptly tailored for various applications to improve resilience in network(s).The 220kV m-GIS showcases our competence and realizes the endeavor of “Make in India”. To strengthen India’s power infrastructure, we will continue to roll out more m-GIS solutions”, remarked Mr. Hiroshi Furuta, Chairman and Managing Director, TTDI.
The m-GIS solution combines high-voltage reliability with strategic financial efficiency, making it ideal for utilities, renewable energy projects, and disaster recovery operations where mobile, fast, and reliable power evacuation solutions are essential, a future-ready investment for resilient power infrastructure. These m-GIS solutions are poised to be a game changer in addressing project requirements during construction and to maintain high availability of power system in operation phase.
TTDI will continue its journey of a series of firsts in m-GIS solutions in India, by manufacturing India’s First indigenous 400kV Mobile Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) System for POWERGRID, expected to be delivered during August’ 2026. Apart from this, indigenous 132kV m-GIS Solution is also lined up for delivery to POWERGRID during November’ 2025.
