TPCODL Ensures reliable Power Supply, Successfully meets 2000 MW Demand During Heatwave Alert

Bhubaneswar, April 16, 2026: TPCODL (TP Central Odisha Distribution Limited) has Successfully met a peak power demand of 2000 MW across its distribution areas of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Paradeep, and Dhenkanal on April 13, 2026 — the highest demand recorded so far this season amid rising temperatures and prevailing heatwave conditions in Odisha.

This comes at a time when the Indian Meteorological Department has issued a yellow warning for heatwave conditions along with thunderstorm activity across parts of the state, indicating a sharp rise in temperature and increased electricity consumption driven by cooling needs.

To prepare for the anticipated surge this season, TPCODL has significantly strengthened its network by adding 334 MVA of capacity, enhancing real-time grid monitoring systems, and mobilising over 9,000 ground personnel to ensure reliable power supply during peak summer conditions.

The company has leveraged advanced technologies including Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) to enable real-time monitoring of feeders, substations, and load flows. These systems facilitate rapid fault detection, remote switching, and dynamic load management during peak demand periods, ensuring high network resilience.

Further strengthening operational readiness, TPCODL has implemented a focused preventive and predictive maintenance strategy, including extensive tree trimming, thermal scanning of transformers, feeder pillars, and underground cable networks to proactively identify potential stress points and minimise disruptions.

Advanced distribution automation solutions such as SCADA operated RMUs, Auto-recloser, FPIs and Feeder Remote Terminal Units (FRTUs) have been deployed across the network to enhance system visibility, enable automated fault detection, and significantly reduce restoration time.

Power Distribution Technology Centre (PDTC), situated at Bhubaneswar continuously monitors network performance and load patterns round-the-clock, supported by integrated digital platforms and communication redundancy to ensure uninterrupted grid operations even during contingencies. Hot standby arrangements at key urban substations further enhance reliability and enable rapid restoration in case of supply interruptions.

In addition to heatwave preparedness, TPCODL has also aligned its operations to manage seasonal disruptions such as Kalbaisakhi storms, with manpower, machinery, and materials strategically positioned as part of its Business Continuity and Disaster Management Plan. The company is fully geared for the summer demand surge and has made arrangements to reliably meet peak loads of 2690 MW during the season.

To support consumers during the high-demand period, TPCODL has strengthened its customer service ecosystem through 24×7 call centre operations, digital command centres, and enhanced communication channels including SMS alerts, missed call services, and mobile-based applications for faster grievance redressal and outage updates.

TPCODL has witnessed growth in power demand over the years, with peak load rising from 1686 MW in FY22 to an estimated 2700 MW in FY27, representing a 60% surge over five years.
