Bhubaneswar, May 2, 2026: On the occasion of World Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) Day, the Odisha Arthritis and Rheumatology Foundation Trust (OARFT) organized a public awareness programme at Sahid Nagar, Bhubaneswar, to educate people about the importance of early identification and treatment of Ankylosing Spondylitis.
Ankylosing Spondylitis is a long-term inflammatory condition that primarily targets the spine, but can also impact other parts of the body, including the eyes. Due to its symptoms resembling common back pain, many patients ignore early signs, resulting in delayed diagnosis and potential irreversible damage.
As part of the initiative, a walkathon was conducted from OARC, Sahid Nagar to Rupali Square to raise awareness about warning signs such as chronic back pain and early morning stiffness. The programme also included expert interactions where OARC’s Medical Director, Prof. Dr. Jyoti Ranjan Parida, a leading rheumatologist of the state, and Dr. Debashish Mohapatra, Chief Consultant Rheumatologist at OARC Sailashree Vihar, shared insights on early diagnosis, effective treatment options, and necessary lifestyle modifications.
The walkathon was inaugurated by Dr. Bharat Panigrahi, President of the Indian Medical Association (Odisha Branch). The event witnessed the presence of distinguished guests including senior physician and former President of the Indian Rheumatology Association (Odisha Chapter), Dr. Manoj Chhotray; AAP Odisha Convenor Mr. Nishikant Mohapatra; and senior journalist Mr. Girija Shankar Dash. They collectively emphasized the need for timely medical consultation and greater public awareness.
OARFT reiterated that recognizing symptoms early and seeking appropriate care can significantly reduce complications, prevent disability, and enhance overall quality of life for patients living with Ankylosing Spondylitis.
