Jharsuguda: As the largest aluminium plant in the world, Vedanta Aluminium’s Jharsuguda unit has put in place a comprehensive framework to manage the fly ash generated from its captive power facilities. Combining real-time technologies with robust on-ground verification mechanisms, the company aims to ensure end-to-end fly ash management practices that strictly adhere to both regulatory and environmental requirements.

All vehicles engaged in fly ash transportation from the plant are equipped with GPS-enabled tracking systems, providing continuous, end-to-end visibility from loading points to authorised end-use destinations. Truckmovement occurs only on approved routes, ensuring route discipline and reducing the risk of any unauthorised diversion or disposal. The plant’s route monitoring systemrecords all trip data digitally, creating a verifiable audit trail which is also accessible by government authorities.

This data-led monitoring has enabledgreater transparency in operations. With vehicle movement logs captured automatically, the dependence on manual records has reduced. The system enables immediate detection of any deviations, supporting prompt corrective action and reinforcing accountability among all logistics partners.

To complement its digital monitoring efforts, the unit hasalso recently deployed Quick Response Teams (QRT) to strengthen itsGPS oversight systems and maintain full visibility and control across the logistics chain. These teams have been tasked with conducting surprise inspections across its fly ash transportation network, providing independent, on-ground validation of compliance. Surprise inspections are conducted  for verifying adherence to approved routes, documentation and handling practices.

The monitoring framework covers key districts in the vicinity of Jharsuguda, including Sambalpur, Sundargarh and Bargarh. A dedicated contact number, 9668972214, has also been launched to support rapid communication and response, enabling swift field-level intervention wherever required. This on-ground presence has reinforced operational discipline among drivers, contractors and supervisors.

By integrating a dual-control monitoring framework that links digital assurance with ground intelligence, the company’s model underscores how technology and on-ground enforcement can work together to deliver responsible fly ash management within the metals and mining sector.
