Bhubaneswar, 20/05/2026: While crime is on the rise in the state, the police have lost morale and gone into a state of coma. The inhuman incident carried out by criminals in broad daylight at Berhampur has brought shame to the people of the state. Every day, the people of Odisha are witnessing scenes of hooliganism and anarchy, alleged the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

Addressing a press conference held today at Sankha Bhawan, party Senior General Secretary Shri BhruguBuxipatra, Biju Yuva Janata Dal President Shri Chinmay Sahoo, and Media Coordinator and Spokesperson Dr. Lenin Mohanty strongly criticized the BJP government over the extreme deterioration of law and order in the state.

Shri Buxipatra said that due to police inaction and encouragement from the ruling party, more than 10 murders have taken place in Ganjam district in the last one month. Since the two prime accused in the barbaric attack that took place on Giriroad last Monday are associates of a local BJP MLA, the police are unable to gather the courage to arrest them. The Berhampur police are under such pressure from the BJP that the SDPO has to report daily at the MLA’s residence. If an ordinary citizen goes to the police station, the police first ask which political party he supports. Even when names are included in the FIR, they are being removed during investigation under pressure from the ruling party. Due to this, Berhampur and Ganjam police districts have earned notoriety as crime hubs of the state.

Shri Sahoo stated that after the double-engine government came to power, an unethical understanding has developed between BJP leaders and criminals across the state, and pressure is being exerted on the police. As a result, the morale of the police has collapsed. The people of the state are witnessing this every day. Incidents such as police personnel being attacked inside a police station in Nayagarh, sand mafia attacking the IIC in Bhuban and forcibly taking away vehicles, and BJP leaders misbehaving with administrative officers in the presence of police at Tangi have come to light. Even after a BJP MLA snatched a PSO’s gun and fired blank shots, no action has been taken. On the very day the Director General of Police spoke about encounters against criminals, such a barbaric incident occurred in Berhampur.

Dr. Mohanty said that the filing of a false rape case against a journalist of the daily newspaper Sakala in Nayagarh and the burning of newspapers is unfortunate. The language being used by BJP leader Arindam Ray against journalists is completely unacceptable, and the BJP should clarify its stand on the matter. Today, journalists and journalism are under threat from leaders of the ruling BJP. The double-engine government has handed over Berhampur and Ganjam police districts into the hands of criminals. The Director General of Police should immediately take steps to control the situation so that ordinary people can regain trust in the police.
