Classical format begins on Day 2 of Tata Steel Asian Junior Open and Girls Championship 2023

Jamshedpur, September 9, 2023: Classical format of the game begins on the second day of the ongoing Tata Steel Asian Junior Open and Girls Championship 2023 at the JRD Tata Sports Complex.

Around 110 players are participating in this competition which will witness total 9 rounds of game played between September 9 to 15 with a time control of 90 mins + 30 second increment in each side.

The Classical format of championship was inaugurated by Abhijeet Avinash Nanoti, Managing Director, ISWP along with N K Tiwari, Secretary of East Singhbhum District Chess Association by making the ceremonial first move on the chess board.

In the Classical format, on the basis of rating, top seeds such as International Master Grebnev Aleksey, playing under the flag of FIDE, Srihari LR of India and Rohit Krishna S of India are participating in the Open category of the championship. While in the Girls category, top seeds such as NurgaliNezreke of Kazakhstan, Salonika Saina and BomminiMounikaAkshaya of India have partiy in the championship.

In the first round of the tournament In the Open category, International Master Grebnev Alexey, playing with white pieces on the first board, defeated Adireddy Arjun of India.  Playing with black pieces on the second board, International Master Srihari L R defeated India’s Bhardiya Harsh. Playing with white pieces on the third board, International Master Rohit Krishna defeated Vrashak Chauhan.

In the Girls category, a very exciting game was seen on the first board when Praganya of India forced NurgaliNezrek of Kazakhstan to play a draw. The game went till 31 moves and the players agreed on a draw.  This is the second time when the top seeded player of the tournament has faced a tough challenge in the very first round by the Indian players.  

While playing with black pieces on the second board, Salonika Saina defeated DishaPatil. Besides, on the third board, playing with white pieces, BominiMounikaAkshaya defeated Dhanishree.
