New Delhi : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that around 57 girls fell ill after consuming food at a hostel in the Memnagar area of Ahmedabad district, Gujarat on 5th April 2026. They complained of abdominal pain, diarrhoea and vomiting and were taken to a hospital for treatment.

The Commission has observed that the content of the news report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of the human rights of the victims. Therefore, it has issued notices to the state Chief Secretary and Ahmedabad Police Commissioner, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. The report is expected to include the status of the health of the victims as well as the investigation of the case.

According to the media report, carried on 5th April 2026, about 18 girls were admitted to the hospital, while the remaining were kept under medical observation.
