NTPC Bongaigaon Lays Foundation Stone for Kitchen & Multi-purpose Hall at Kokrajhar Jail, Aligning with ‘Karagar se Karigar’ Initiative
Bongaigaon: In a significant step towards improving infrastructure and well-being at the Kokrajhar District Jail, the foundation stone for the Development of Kitchen & Multi-purpose Hall was laid today by Smt. Masanda M Pertin, IAS, District Commissioner, Kokrajhar, in the presence of senior officials from NTPC Bongaigaon and the District Administration.
The project, being implemented under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of NTPC Bongaigaon, aims to enhance the living conditions of jail inmates by providing modern kitchen facilities and a multi-purpose hall for various recreational, vocational, and rehabilitation activities. This initiative aligns with the Government of Assam’s ‘Karagar se Karigar’ (From Prison to Artisan) program, which focuses on skill development and economic rehabilitation of inmates to enable their reintegration into society.

Speaking on the occasion, Smt. Masanda M Pertin appreciated NTPC’s commitment to community welfare and emphasized the significance of such interventions in improving the rehabilitation ecosystem for inmates. She expressed confidence that the initiative would contribute towards skill development and better living standards for the inmates.
Shri Arnab Maitra, Head of Project, NTPC Bongaigaon, highlighted NTPC’s philosophy of ‘People Before Profit’, reiterating the organization’s belief in holistic community development. Shri Arnab Maitra stated that NTPC has been actively contributing to social upliftment in the region through various initiatives in education, healthcare, skill development, and infrastructure enhancement. He reaffirmed NTPC’s continued support for projects that bring meaningful transformation to society.

The ceremony was attended by Shri Nitya Binod Warie, ACS, Addl.District Commissioner Kokrajhar, Shri Rabiram Ingti, Superintendent of Kokrajhar Jail, Shri Onkar Nath, AGM (HR), NTPC Bongaigaon, officials from PWD Building Department and CSR officials. A special highlight of the event was a demonstration of yoga asanas and skills by jail inmates, showcasing the positive impact of recreational and reformative programs conducted inside the jail premises. Following the foundation stone laying, the dignitaries visited various sections of the jail, reviewing the existing kitchen, living areas, and recreational spaces.
The kitchen and multi-purpose hall, being developed at a financial outlay of Rs. 32.82 lakh under NTPC’s CSR, will cater to nutritional, recreational, and rehabilitation needs, thereby fostering a more humane and conducive environment within the jail.
This initiative aligns with NTPC’s ongoing efforts to support institutional infrastructure development, ensuring that marginalized sections of society receive the necessary support for reformation and social integration.
