With BJP in Power, Odisha Plunges into a Dark Era of Crimes Against Women

BHUBANESWAR, 25/06/2025: As incidents of women abuse and rape alarmingly increase across Odisha, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) today launched a scathing attack on the state BJP government following the alleged drugging and rape of a minor girl from a minority community by a former BJP city president in Berhampur.

At a press conference held today at Shankha Bhavan, Smt. Snehangini Chhuria, Senior General Secretary of BJD, along with former MP Smt. Sharmistha Sethi and former State Women’s Commission Chairperson Smt. Lopamudra Buxipatra, asserted that despite the BJP coming to power on the promise of women’s safety, the women of the state are now more unsafe than ever. “After such a heinous act by a frontline leader of the BJP came to light, the real face of the BJP has been exposed,” stated Smt. Chhuria.

The identified accused Bhavani Prasad Das, who operated a nursing home named ‘Vajpayee Clinic’ in Berhampur city, falsely presenting himself as a doctor. It has since been revealed he is a fake doctor. The accused is a prominent figure within the BJP, previously served as the BJP’s Berhampur City President and Vishwa Hindu Parishad Ganjam District President, and currently holds the position of District President of the BJP’s Workers’ Front, said Smt. Chhuria.

This BJP leader lured a minor girl from a minority community to his nursing home under the guise of providing nursing training and employment. He then allegedly drugged and raped her at night. While local police initially attempted to suppress the complaint lodged by the girl’s family, their persistence and threat to expose the incident on social media forced the police to register a case and arrest the accused.

“The accused, Bhavani Prasad Das, a frontline BJP worker, has been seen in photographs with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and is known to be close to two ministers hails from the district, Mines and Transport Minister Bibhuti Jena and Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Minister Gokulanand Mallick,” Ms. Chhuria highlighted. Given that the accused has been running the clinic for an extended period, the BJD suspects he may have exploited many other girls in the past. Furthermore, the party raised serious concerns about potential women trafficking and organ trafficking operations being conducted through this clinic.

The BJD is demanding immediate and proper justice for the victim and has called for the case to be handed over to the CBI for a thorough investigation. “If the ruling party commits such heinous acts while in the grip of power, then whom will the people trust?” questioned Mrs. Chhuria.

Mrs. Chhuria concluded by reiterating that despite repeated complaints from the Biju Janata Dal regarding the alarming increase in rape incidents and the resulting insecurity for women in the state, the government remains inactive. “One after another, incidents of rape and gang rape are coming to public attention. With BJP in power, Odisha plunges into a dark era of crimes against women,” she asserted. “As a responsible opposition party, we warn the state government to take immediate and appropriate steps to protect women, otherwise the Biju Janata Dal will take to the streets.”
