Burla/Bargarh, 23-03-2025: TPWODL strongly condemns the unfortunate incident that took place on March 21, 2025, involving the abuse and physical assault to our Section Officer, Shri Gajendra Raut, and other employees of the company. As per FIR No. 57, registered at Ambabana police station, of Bargarh District, the police investigation into the matter is currently underway, and we are confident that appropriate action will be taken based on the investigation and the circumstantial evidence.

To provide context of the matter and to clarify all concerned in this matter, the information received through our internal sources is that, Shri SaudagarKuanr, a consumer from Jarimuli village (Consumer Number: 512422020247), has atotal outstanding electricity bill of Rs. 91,550, out of which of Rs. 43,782is from 1st Jan 2021 onwards. During the entire current financial year, he has paid only twice and a total amount of Rs. 737. He is a regular defaulter. Because of this kind of default consumers, the regularly paying consumers suffer. In compliance with the guidelines set by the Hon’ble Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC), TPWODL disconnected the electricity supply to the consumer due to the non-payment of dues.

Regrettably, reports have surfaced in the media that misrepresent the facts of the incident. While the matter is under investigation, we would like to clarify that Mr. Ishan Chandra Bhoi, a resident of Bangapali village, blocked the vehicle carrying the Section Officer and maintenance staff at Ramkhol village. He then proceeded to abuse verbally and physically assaulted the staff members present in the vehicle. This behaviour is completely unacceptable, and TPWODL stands firm in its commitment to ensuring the safety and dignity of its employees.

It is imperative to highlight that when consumers accumulateunpaid bills for months together, resulting in significant arrears, disconnection of services is a necessary and lawful action. However, it is deeply troubling when such situations lead to harassment and violence against our staff members who are simply performing their professional and official duties in line with regulatory guidelines.

TPWODL once again urges all consumers to settle their outstanding electricity bills within the designated timeframes through the available payment channels, to avoid any inconvenience caused by service disconnection. The company also reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that all employees, whether directly or indirectly associated, are directed to always treat consumers with the utmost respect and professionalism.

We trust that the law enforcement authorities will take swift and appropriate action to address this issue, and we remain committed to uphold the safety and well-being of all our employees in carrying out their duties while providing services to consumers. It is paramount importance in all respect.
