EAST COAST RAILWAY CARRIED 7000 TONNES OF PARCEL DURING LOCKDOWN

  •  6160 Tonnes of essential commodities transported during the period April-June,2020, through Parcel Trains.
  •  31 Tonnes medicine & 20 Tonnes medical equipments carried
  • 4376 Tonnes of fruits and vegetables including 4345 Tonnes of mango transported.
  • 824 Tonnes of fish, 210 Tonnes of milk products & egg and 673 Tonnes of other essential commodities carried to different destinations
  •  5240 Tonnes of inward parcel traffic

Traditionally major share of Parcel Traffic used to be carried through regular coaching trains. During Lockdown, Time Tabled parcel trains were started as a new concept when regular coaching train operations were suspended. This was done to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential commodities so that people do not face any scarcity of essential items during lock down in view of pandemic COVID19.

During this period, Parcel traffic has emerged as preferred mode for carrying essential items like fruits & vegetables, milk, edible oil, grocery items, medicine & medical equipments, PPEs, sugar and salt, etc. to  various parts of the country.

In the first quarter of current financial year, i.e. from April to June, 2020; East Coast Railway has loaded 7000 Tonnes of parcel that include 6160 Tonnes of essential commodities through Special Parcel Express Trains. 31 Tonnes of medicine & 20 Tonnes of medical equipments were carried during this period. This includes many life saving medicines and samples to laboratories.

Parcel Trains played important role in maintaining necessary supply chain for edible items. 210 Tonnes of milk/dairy products & eggs were loaded and transported from ECoR jurisdiction.  Dry milk powder and Edible oil were also received in ECoR.

This period became very critical for farmers as sending their produce to the market was a challenge. ECoR came forward to help them in these testing times. 4376 Tonnes of fruits and vegetables were transported to various markets safely and timely. This includes 4345 Tonnes of mango from Andhra Pradesh to markets in Delhi. 824 Tonnes of fish was also carried to consumption centres from coastal regions. Apart from this, 673 Tonnes of other essential commodities have been transported to different destinations.

During this period, 5240 Tonnes of parcel has been received in ECoR jurisdiction. This inward traffic comprises of Medical equipments,medicines,Cotton bags,PPEs, Hatching egg, Milk etc.
