Bhubaneswar/ 24.12.2025: Hindalco Industries Limited, Unit – Hirakud Smelter & Power, Sambalpur, has achieved another significant sustainability milestone with the successful commissioning of a 150 KLD Additional Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) equipped with advanced treatment technology. The newly commissioned facility ensures complete treatment, recycling, and reuse of domestic wastewater generated from the township, reinforcing the unit’s commitment to sustainable wastewater management and environmental stewardship.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by Mr. Kailash Nath Pandey, Business Head – Mining and Sambalpur Cluster & Primary Aluminium Sales, along with the senior management team of Hindalco. Distinguished attendees included Mr. Shree Nath Mishra (Head Finance, Sambalpur Cluster & Mines), Mr. Sumit Mukherjee (Unit Head), Mr. Pratap Sahu (Head Smelter), Mr. Arun Singh (Head CPP), Mr. Vishwas Shinde (Head HR), Mr. Vidyanath Jha, Mr. Bibhor Mohapatra (Infra & Civil Head, Sambalpur Cluster), Mr. Ranjan Jena (Environment Head), Mr. Tarun Kumar Sahu, Mr. Kumar Roshan, Mr. Mahendra Singh, and other officials.

Hindalco Hirakud Smelter & Power already operates a robust sewage treatment infrastructure with a cumulative capacity of 1,300 KLD across the Smelter, Power Plant, and Township. The addition of this 150 KLD STP, featuring state-of-the-art treatment processes, further strengthens the township’s wastewater management system. Treated wastewater from the plant is fully reused within the colony, significantly reducing dependence on freshwater resources.

This initiative aligns with Hindalco’s Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) philosophy by eliminating liquid effluent discharge, optimizing water reuse, and ensuring compliance with applicable environmental regulations. The project underscores Hindalco’s continuous efforts toward responsible resource management, circular water use, and long-term environmental sustainability.
