Hirakud Smelter & Power Commissioned 100 KLD Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) Unit with Advanced MVR System

Bhubaneswar, 15/12: Hindalco Industries Limited, Unit- Hirakud Smelter & Power, Sambalpur has achieved a major sustainability milestone with the commissioning of a 100 KLD Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) Plant equipped with Mechanical Vapour Recompression (MVR) technology. The new facility ensures complete recycling and reuse of industrial effluents, marking a significant step toward sustainable water management and environmental stewardship.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by Smt. Uma Nanduri, IFS, Member Secretary, OSPCB; Dr. S. N. Nanda, Regional Officer, SPCB and officials from the Odisha State Pollution Control Board and the Hindalco’s Senior management team, including Mr Sumit Mukherjee (Unit Head), Mr Pratap Sahu (Head Smelter), Mr Arun Singh, (Head CPP), Mr Soubhagya Tripathy, Dy. Head Corporate Affairs, Mr Ranjan Jena (Env -Head), Mr Rupesh Mahajan, Mr Biswajit Tiwari, Mr Bibhor Mohapatra, Mr Tushar Patra, Mr Ashish Das and others were present at the event.

The MVR-based ZLD system functions by evaporating and condensing wastewater using recycled steam energy, enabling 90–95% recovery of clean water for reuse within the plant. This innovative system eliminates liquid effluent discharge, minimizes freshwater consumption, and ensures full compliance with ZLD regulations.

With an investment of approximately ₹35 crore, the project underscores Hindalco’s strategic focus on sustainability, resource efficiency, and circular economy. The initiative aligns with the company’s long-term vision of achieving Water Positivity.

This pioneering project positions Hindalco Hirakud Smelter & Power among the MVR-based ZLD facilities, setting a benchmark for responsible industrial practices in the aluminium sector and reaffirming Hindalco’s commitment to environmental excellence and future-ready operations.
