Bhubaneswar, 09/01/2026: Biju Janata Dal has said BJP State Government in Odisha is making tall claims on women empowerment but reality at grass root level is entirely different.
In a press statement, BJD Spokesperson and Media Coordinator Dr. Lenin Mohanty said BJP State Government’s tall claim of women empowerment is blatant lie. Women Empowerment in Odisha should not be confined only to Subhadra Yojana and Mukhyamantri Kanya Bibaha Yojana. BJP State government is ignoring health, education, skill development, livelihood, safety and security of women. Mere implementation of Subhadra Yojana or and Mukhyamantri Kanya Bibaha Yojana will not lead to women empowerment unless all aspects of women empowerment is taken care of.
Recently published the Top Cities for Women in India (TCWI) report by Avtar Group identifies exposes women safety situation in Odisha. Bhubaneswar is not even in top 25 cities of India and ranked at 34 among 125 cities. The study uses a City Inclusion Score (CIS) to measure urban inclusivity focusing on women’s safety, participation, and career growth.
Odisha is lagging behind in top cities for women in India in parameters like sufficient job opportunities matching women’s skillset in the city, women’s safety, quality and affordable education, safe and affordable accommodation, safe and efficient public transport, reliable and affordable healthcare facilities, and opportunities for personal and professional growth.
While Bhubaneswar is ranked at 34 in total and in Social Inclusion Score, Bhubaneswar is ranked at 61. This low rank clearly reveals Odisha is not safe for women.
A total of 40,947 cases of crimes against women, including 3,205 rapes, were registered in Odisha in 15 months of BJP Government, according to data provided by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi in the Odisha Legislative Assembly.
These data and reports indicate that crimes against women, including rape, gang rape, and violence, are a serious and pressing concern in the state. The statistics show high rates of various crimes against women, prompting significant public and political concern.
Dr. Lenin Mohanty urged instead of tall claims and promotional advertisement, BJP Government should work on real women’s empowerment issues and measures involving multi-faceted strategies focusing on legal protection, economic independence, education, health, and political participation, including strengthening laws against violence, promoting women in entrepreneurship, ensuring equal pay, improving access to credit, providing childcare, and implementing gender-sensitive policies in workplaces and governance to address systemic inequalities and foster autonomy and choice.
