Bhubaneswar: Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar achieved one more milestone in advanced medical care by successfully treating an 19-year-old patient suffering from multiorgan failure caused by H1N1 pneumonia. The young patient came to the hospital’s emergency department with severe symptoms, including fever, persistent cough for eight days, critically low oxygen levels (70% on room air), and unrecordable blood pressure.
The patient was immediately shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) under the care of Dr. Sarat Behera, Director Critical Care & Senior Consultant Pulmonology,. She was provided non-invasive ventilation and adequate fluid resuscitation but required invasive mechanical ventilation due to her deteriorating condition. Despite high doses of vasopressors like noradrenaline, vasopressin, and adrenaline, maintaining a mean arterial pressure above 65 mmHg was challenging.
Over her 15-days hospitalization, including 10 days on a ventilator, the patient faced additional complications, requiring dialysis as she developed multiorgan failure. “Patients in such critical conditions have a survival rate of only 10-15%,” stated Dr. Sarat Behera. “It was a collective team effort and the availability of advanced resources that made her recovery possible.”
Thanks to the expertise of Dr. Behera and the hospital’s highly skilled critical care team, the patient has made a full recovery and was discharged in stable condition.
Dr. Saktimaya Mohapatra, Hospital Director at Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar, said, “This remarkable recovery is a testament to our hospital’s commitment to providing exceptional critical care. It underscores the importance of having state-of-the-art infrastructure, cutting-edge technology, and a dedicated team of specialists. We are proud of the effort and expertise demonstrated by Dr. Behera and the entire critical care team in saving this young patient’s life.”
Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar’s state-of-the-art infrastructure played a crucial role in the patient’s recovery. The hospital is equipped with advanced medical technology, including ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) facilities, a 24/7 critical care team, and well-trained nursing staff and technicians.
This case underscores Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar’s commitment to delivering world-class healthcare and tackling even the most complex medical challenges
