Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar’s Gynaecology Department Achieves Successful Pregnancy in a Rare case of Uterine Malformation
Bhubaneswar, 17thJanuary 2025:Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar has achieved a significant milestone by successfully managing a highly complex pregnancy in a 31-year-old woman diagnosed with unicornuate uterus, a rare uterine malformation in which only one half of the uterus develops. Women with this condition face problem in pregnancy like infertility, recurrent miscarriage & premature delivery. Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar is one of the few institutions offering specialized solutions for women facing infertility due to this rare condition. This ground-breaking achievement marks the first successful case of its kind at the hospital, further solidifying its reputation for delivering exceptional medical care in treating complex and rare gynaecological conditions.
The patient, originally from Uttar Pradesh and residing in Paradip (Jagatsinghpur district), had faced over a decade of infertility and multiple failed IVF attempts. Two years ago, she sought treatment at the Gynecology Department of Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar, where she was diagnosed with unicornuate uterus. This condition often results in limited uterine space, making conception and maintaining a pregnancy exceedingly difficult.
Under the expert guidance of Dr. Monica Gupta, Consultant Gynecologist, the patient underwent an advanced and individualized treatment plan. The protocol included hysteroscopic enhancement of the uterine cavity, along with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. PRP therapy, derived from the patient’s own blood, is an innovative procedure that improves uterine lining thickness and enhances the chances of successful embryo implantation. Dr. Devi Prasad Acharya, Consultant, Blood Bank, assisted in the PRP therapy.
After undergoing two IVF cycles, the patient conceived successfully. Through careful monitoring and comprehensive prenatal care, she delivered a healthy baby at 36 weeks, weighing 2.4 kg. Both mother and baby are doing well, a testament to the efficacy of the treatments provided.
Dr. Monica Gupta, Consultant Gynecologist, commented, “This case exemplifies the importance of early diagnosis and innovative treatments like hysteroscopic cavity enhancement and PRP therapy in overcoming infertility caused by uterine malformations. We are proud to have been part of this patient’s journey to motherhood and to offer hope to others facing similar challenges.”
Dr. SaktimayaMohapatra, Hospital Director, Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar, added, “This remarkable achievement highlights our expertise in handling rare and complex medical conditions.
