Bhubaneswar 12th April,2025: Development Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary to Government Smt. Anu Garg, IAS stressed the need to enhance the irrigation potential of the State through construction of more numbers of MIPs and Check Dams in the coming days.

            Presiding over a high-level meeting held in the Department of Water Resources on Friday dt.11.04.2025, the Development Commissioner reviewed various projects and gave necessary instructions and suggestions for increasing irrigation capacity in the State through construction of MIPs  and Check Dams

            The State government has taken extensive steps and given priority on Water Conservation and Management. Efforts are on to ensure that water reaches the farmers at the tail end of the canal and irrigation systems. WhileIrrigation and Water Management are collectively ensured throughLarge, Small, Medium, Lift irrigation, Mega Lift and other systems, Minor Irrigation Projects (MIPs) are significantly contributing to increasing the irrigation capacity of the state.

          In line with the commitment made by the Hon’ble Chief Minister in the budget speech for creation of an irrigation potential of 15 lakh hectares in the next 5 years, thehigh levelcommittee meeting with the MI functionaries discussed to configure how MI could contribute significantly in this endeavor.

            A roadmap for construction of 80 new MIPs and 3000 Check Dams in the next 5 years, as per site specific feasibilitywas discussed in the meeting.

            Viability for construction of MIPs and Check Dams, especially in those areas where  facility for availability of water, assessment of other features of the area including soil type, crop pattern and collective needs, integrating minor irrigation with other irrigation methods and the possibility of utilizing technology for efficient water management were discussed in the meeting.

            Senior officials and engineers of the Department of Water Resources and Engineers participated in the discussion.
