ODIA EDITION OF ‘LILAVATI’S DAUGHTERS’ UNVEILED AT SOA

Bhubaneswar, March 18: The Odia edition of the book ‘Lilavati’s Daughters’ published by the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bengaluru, was released at the SOA Deemed to be University here by Prof. Damodar Acharya, Chairman of the University’s International Advisory Board, on Wednesday.

                The book, edited by eminent scientist Padma Sri Prof. Rohini Godbole and Prof. Ram Ramaswamy, has been translated into Odia by Prof. Nachieketa Khamari Sharma and Prof. Deepak Kumar Patnaik, Professors at SOA Deemed to be University.

                SOA’s Founder President Prof. (Dr.) Manojranjan Nayak, Vice-Chancellor of SOA Prof. Pradipta Kumar Nanda and Director of SOA Prof. Manas Kumar Mallick were present during the unveiling of the book.

                Explaining the contents of the book, Prof. Sharma said it contained the life history of 100 Indian women scientists portraying their struggle to emerge as researchers of repute. The book also revealed how these scientists faced hurdles in their lives while trying to strike a balance between their family responsibilities and profession.

                Prof. Sharma said that 42 of these women scientists had figured in the Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan Fortnightly Academic Lecture (SOAFAL) series held online every 15 days.

                Three of the women scientists who had worked in Odisha were Prof. Priyambada Mohanty Hejmadi, Prof. Pushpa Khare and Prof. Sikha Verma. The book also contained the story of Dr. G.V. Satyabathi who became the first woman to be appointed as Director General of ICMR in 1994.
