New Delhi: Indian President, Droupadi Murmu reached Suriname’s capital, Paramaribo on Sunday to commemorate the 150th anniversary of arrival of Indians in Suriname. This is President Murmu’s first State visit since she assumed the President’s office last year in July. She held delegation level talks with her counterpart, Chandrikapersad Santokhi.
After the talks, the President’s official handle tweeted, “Both the Presidents discussed ways to deepen India-Suriname relations and held wide ranging discussions on multiple areas including defence, agriculture, IT and capacity building. India and Suriname exchanged four MoUs in various fields including health and agriculture.”
Apart from the usual bilateral meetings between President Murmu and her counterpart, what stood out the most was her interaction with the common people in Suriname. Amidst her busy schedule and official engagements, President Murmu met with a group of children who had come to greet her. She offered Made in India chocolates to these kids who later thanked her for the gift.
President Murmu is scheduled to interact with a cross-section of Indian diaspora in Suriname on the last day of her visit before she leaves for Serbia. In Serbia she will meet President Vučić, Prime Minister Ana Brnabić and Speaker of the National Assembly, Vladimir Orlic. She’ll also be joined by a 20-member business delegation comprising of industry chambers such as ASSOCHAM, FICCI and CII.
