Sabai Grass handicraft workshop organised with support of Tata Steel Foundation for women SHG members

Baliapal: With an aim to empower rural women through livelihood initiatives, Subarnarekha Port Private Limited (SPPL) has started a two-month long training workshop on Sabai Grass handicraft products. The women SHG members of five villages of Pratappur Gram Panchayat, Baliapal have participated in it.

Mr. Deepak Kumar Das, Tahsildar, Baliapal had joined as the chief guest on opening ceremony of the training workshop. The guests of honour were Mrs, Kasturi Bala Patra, Sarpanch, Pratappur Gram Panchayat; Mrs. Kaveri Rout. Member of Panchayat Samiti, Pratappur; and Mrs. Sushma Dutta (President, Gram Panchayat Level Federation, Chaumukh and Secretary, Block Level Federation, Baliapal). Mr. Pramod Kumar, Senior Divisional Manager, Administration, SPPL, and Mr. Pramod Kumar Patra, Lead Balasore, Tata Steel Foundation were present on the occasion.

Commending SPPL for the initiative, Mr.Deepak Kumar Das, Tahsildar, Baliapal said, “This initiative will help women to be financially independent and empowered. This will also supplement the central and state livelihood mission programmes like ORMAS, OLM.”

Speaking on the occasion, Mrs. Kasturi Bala Patra, Sarpanch and Member of Panchyat Samiti of Pratapur Panchayat said, ‘The rural women need guidance and training to learn new skills. This workshop will help them with new livelihood opportunities. Mrs. Susama Dutta, GPLF President, Chaumukh, also urged the SHG members to make best use of the training.

The workshop will help build the capability of the members of the SHGs through training on different types of Sabai grass handicrafts, to provide a better opportunity for additional income of the members. These trained members would further train other members of SHGs on this skill. The training is being provided by two certified empanelled trainers from Department of Handicraft, Government of Odisha. This is one of the many programs planned under livelihood initiatives of SPPL, which would be conducted in the coming days.
