SUM CHOSEN TO BE COMPREHENSIVE REGIONAL TRAINING CENTRE FOR MANAGING CARDIO-PULMONARY EMERGENCIES, FIRST IN ODISHA
Bhubaneswar, March 26: The Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, faculty of medical sciences of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan Deemed to be University (SOA) at Kalinga Nagar here, has been chosen to be the regional centre for Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Comprehensive Cardiac Life Support (CCLS) training for doctors and paramedics by the Indian Resuscitation Council (IRC).
IMS and SUM Hospital has become the first such institute in Odisha to be chosen for BCLS and CCLS training for doctors, its Medical Superintendent Prof. (Dr.) Pusparaj Samantasinghar said.
The hospital successfully conducted a two-day IRC-approved workshop on BCLS and CCLS on March 23 and 24.
Prof. (Dr.) S. Chakra Rao, Chairman of IRC, Prof. (Dr.) Alok Samantaray, Professor and Head of Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at Sri Venkateswar Institute of Medical Sciences, Tirupati, and Prof. (Dr.) Srinivas Rao, Professor and Head of Department of Anesthesiology at S.V. Medical College, Tirupati were the external faculties for the workshop. Forty five doctors including faculties of IMS and post graduate students were trained in the workshop the objective of which was to train the trainers (TOT) with advanced skills to manage cardiac emergencies and life threatening situations.

The valedictory function of the workshop was held on March 24 which was attended by the Dean of IMS and SUM Hospital, Prof. (Dr.) Sanghamitra MIshra and Medical Superintendent Prof. (Dr.) Samantasinghar.
The workshop was conducted by the Department of Emergency Medicine under the supervision of Prof. (Dr.) Sukhdev Nayak, Head of the Department and coordinated by Prof. (Dr.) Prakash Kumar Sahoo, Additional Dean (Academics).
Prof. (Dr.) Nayak and Prof. (Dr.) Sahoo, along with the IRC delegates called on the Odisha governor, Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati at the Raj Bhavan on March 24 and discussed with him the need for spreading awareness about basic and comprehensive cardiac life support training among the masses.
