Bhubaneswar, Oct. 21: Medical thoracoscopy, which has emerged as a highly important intervention in the field of Pulmonary Medicine to diagnose Pleuropulmonary diseases, has both diagnostic and therapeutic uses.
It was the subject of a day-long Continuing Medical Education (CME) program and workshop at the SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM) here on Sunday where several experts shared their views.
Among corporate institutions, SUMUM stands out in having fully functional bronchoscopy and thoracoscopy suite facilities.
“We believe that knowledge is power and sharing the same is a continuous process”, Dr. Swetapadma Dash, Chief Executive Officer of SUMUM, said.
“It’s a proud moment for us to have pioneered Odisha’s first Medical Thoracoscopy CME and Workshop, offering hands-on experience with live animal models,” she said.
The enthusiastic participation of HODs, students, and faculty reaffirms SUMUM’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of medical education and fostering a culture of excellence, Dr. Dash said
The hospital’s department of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine organised the event which was the first of its kind in the state till date. There were lecture sessions which were crisp and informative along with one to one interactions with eminent faculties.
The main highlight of the program was the use of animal models attempted for the first time in the state for the students to practice and get a real time feel of the procedure. Added to this, there were thoracic ultrasound and indwelling pleural catheter hands-on sessions.
“The success of this workshop demonstrates our shared commitment to advancing medical knowledge. I am pleased to see SUMUM leading the charge, providing professionals and students with the opportunity to refine their skills in thoracoscopy, Brig. (Dr.) Biraj Mohan Mishra, Chief of Medical Services, SUMUM, said.
It is an initiative that will undoubtedly raise the standard of healthcare across the region, he said.
Dr. Satyajit Acharya, Consultant, Department of Pulmonary Medicine at SUMUM, said
continous learning was the key to success in any field. “In this era of interventions, Medical Thoracoscopy will serve as an important diagnostic and therapeutic tool,” he said.
Dr. Alisha Chaudhury, Consultant, Department of Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the hospital, said knowledge being power, sharing and learning was a continuous process. Medical thoracoscopy is the future of intervention pulmonology, she remarked.
The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Brig. (Dr.) Biraj Mohan Mishra while Dr. Satyajit Acharya welcomed the gathering and gave a brief presentation on the services offered by the Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine department. Prof. (Dr.) Banani Jena, President, and Dr. Manoranjan Das, Secretary respectively of Odisha Chest Society also graced the program. All the faculties were felicitated on stage and Dr. Chaudhury proposed the vote of thanks.
