TECNIMONT (MAIRE), PARADEEP MUNICIPALITY AND NITK – SURATHKAL HELD CEREMONY TO LAUNCH THE BIOGAS PLANT PROJECT IN PARADEEP, INDIA
- The one-ton-per-day biogas plant aims to support community kitchens in providing cooking gas using food and vegetable waste as feedstock
Mumbai, 11 February 2025 –Tecnimont Private Limited (TCMPL), the Indian subsidiary of TECNIMONT, Paradeep Municipality and the National Institute of Technology of Karnataka Surathkal (NITK)held the groundbreaking ceremony for the one-ton biogas plant at Paradeep Municipality, District Jagatsinghpur, Odisha.
The event was held at the presence of Shri. Sampad Chandra Swain, Minister of State for Industries, Skill Development and Technical Education in Government of Odisha, Shri. Basanta Biswal, Chairman, Paradeep Municipality and Mr. Alessandro Bernini CEOof MAIRE groupas well as othermain government dignitaries and NITK representatives.
Thisbiogas plant is part of TCMPL Corporate Social Responsibility’s initiatives, being executed under a tripartite agreement in collaboration with the Paradeep Municipality, the District Administration of Jagatsinghpur, and the NITK. The project aims to set up a small-scale facility to produce biogasto be used as cooking gas by using food and vegetable waste as feedstock, effectively closing the waste-to-resource loop. The plant is expected to be operational within the next 12 months to serve local communities.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Milind Baride, India Region Vice-President, MAIRE group said, “This facility reflects MAIRE group’s strong commitment to circularity, social responsibility, and economic sustainability in the communities it serves. It underscores TCMPL’s dual focus on environmental stewardship and social empowerment, offering a scalable model for similar renewable energy projects in the future.”
Shri. Sampad Chandra Swain, Minister of State for Industries, Skill Development and Technical Education in Government of Odisha, said: “The proposed biogas plant will recycle the municipal food waste and reduce landfill burden. Segregated waste from municipal jurisdiction will be collected and treated at this one-ton biogas plant to produce as final output the compressed biogas which will be used as fuel and supplied back to the community kitchen, promoting a sustainable energy ecosystem”.
Shri. Basant Kumar Biswal, Chairman, Paradeep Municipality said, “This project is witness of the continuous perseverance of the entire Paradeep Municipality officials who have made this feat possible. This project will not only help to set an example for circular economy but will also generate green energy employment in Paradeep.”
The project also emphasizes educational benefits, building on a pilot phase at the NITK campus that provided foundational training for students. The plant will serve as a model for innovative solutions to manage organic waste while actively engaging university students in practical learning experiences.
Speaking about the project, Prof. B. Ravi, Director of NITK, stated, “NITK has been actively exploring sustainability initiatives on our Surathkal campus, supported by the MAIRE group. We have 500 kg biogas plant operating at NITK supported by TCMPL.We are delighted to scale up this experience to Paradeep, thereby contributing to Odisha’s green energy objectives.We aspire for this project to inspire students, budding entrepreneurs, and other corporations to harness the vast potential of renewable energy.
