Bhubaneswar: An electricity meter tampering racket has been unearthed in Cuttack district. The suspected prime perpetrator was arrested by Athagarh Police on February 2, 2025, and is in police custody.
A toolkit used for meter tampering was recovered and it was revealed that a significant amount was being charged to consumers for each meter tampering. Further investigations are on to identify the other team members and take appropriate action. The suspected meter tampered cases are being inspected.
Electricity theft is a criminal offense, under Section 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003 that impacts the reliability besides being a safety risk. Special teams have been deployed to detect, eliminate and initiate legal actions against power theft.
