Bhubaneswar, April 18: A free laryngeal check up of patients with voice disorder was conducted at the Phulnakhara campus of Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital on the occasion of World Voice Day on Tuesday.
Organised by the ENT Department of the hospital, the check up using laryngeal endoscopy led to diagnosis of early cancer of the vocal cord in a few cases, Prof. (Dr.) Khageswar Rout, Head of Department of ENT, said.
The purpose of observing the World Voice Day was to spread the message that sudden change in voice could be the sign of underlying laryngeal malignancy especially in persons who have the habit of smoking, chewing tobacco or consumption of alcohol, he said.
“People in old age are vulnerable to developing cancer larynx and professionals like teachers, singers, lawyers and vendors are in the high risk category because of the overuse of their vocal cord,” he said.
However, early detection of voice related disorders lead to effective treatment,” Prof. (Dr.) Rout said adding with advanced modalities of diagnosis and treatment available at present laryngeal cancer could be treated effectively.
Besides Prof. (Dr.) Rout, Dr. Smruti Ranjan, Dr. Bibekananda Acharya, Dr. Subhra Pradhan, Dr. Aurodeep Luthar and Dr. Paresh Giri were associated with the program.
