Bhubaneswar, May 20: Heat wave conditions will continue to prevail in interior districts of Odisha with most stations likely to record day temperatures of 45 degrees Celsius or more during the next ten days, according to the Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) of SOA Deemed to be University here.
This abnormal rise of temperature, caused due to northerly movement of the sun along with clear sky conditions, will continue till May 30, Dr. Sarat Chandra Sahu, Director of CEC, said.
The conditions were further accentuated by the blowing of northwesterly dry hot wind from north India towards the Bay of Bengal which raised the temperature by 3 to 4 degrees C, he said.
The coastal districts would have fluctuation in day temperature because of onshore winds but Bhubaneswar city may record 45 degrees C for two to three days from May 24, Dr. Sahu said.
The night temperature will hover around an uncomfortable 30 degrees C during this period as earth’s heat will not radiate to the upper atmosphere because of a foggy layer at a height of one km above earth’s surface from evening onwards, he said.
He said there might be occasional Kalbaisakhi at isolated locations of the state on certain days during the period but it would not help reduce the impact of heat wave as it would be localized phenomena. The weather, however, might change after May 30 due to movement of westerly upper air trough from central India towards the coastal regions, Dr. Sahu said.
