FY27 Marked as Investment Year Ahead of Profitability Acceleration

Mumbai : Reliance Retail’s omni-channel pivot in current fiscal seen as investment year for future growth; Analysts see accelerated profitability from FY28
Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd. (RRVL) is undergoing a sequenced operational reset, absorbing near-term margins to build extensive hyper-local supply chains and scale its digital footprint. For Q2 FY27, core net retail revenue (adjusted for the consumer brands demerger) grew 5.8% to 6.4% YoY to ₹80,220 crore. Operational EBITDA contracted 11.1% YoY to ₹5,886 crore as margins compressed to 7.3%, impacted by the festive calendar shifting entirely to the third quarter, input-cost inflation absorbed for consumers, and aggressive investments in quick commerce.
Analysts across major research houses characterize FY27 as an intentional “investment year,” predicting that store-level productivity gains, supply chain maturity, and operating leverage will translate scale into accelerated profitability over FY28 and FY29.
Analysts quotes:
• J.P. Morgan:
“Reliance Retail is ramping up its online operations significantly (further positioned advantageously in smaller cities vs competition), intending them to be accretive to the bottomline in FY28… We expect better EBITDA growth in 2H as revenue growth improves (inflation, festive) and margin contraction to reduce (y/y) on a favorable base… Valuations look comfortable.”
• Bank of America (BofA) Global Research:
“Mgmt in the analyst meet highlighted that Retail strategy has remained unchanged and the company has been building online presence on back of lot of discipline. They are trading off short term earnings growth to build a very strong digital platform… Focus will be to increase the dark store network & as utilization improves these will start getting accretive to bottom line.”
• CLSA Research:
“Reliance reiterated FY27 should be seen as a reset year as it consolidates its offline business and strengthens its digital and quick commerce businesses, which should pave the way for a material jump in retail Ebitda over next two years… Steady streamlining of retail operations allowing for a recovery in its growth momentum in the next few quarters will drive a significant upside for the stock.”
• Kotak Institutional Equities & Prabhudas Lilladher:
“The company reiterated that in FY2027, the focus is on online scale-up with discipline. The benefits of this scale into value will be seen in FY2028/29, with increase in customer lifetime value, increase in monetization, raising productivity, and higher cash generation.”
On the ground, Reliance Retail rationalized its offline footprint by exiting 525 unviable locations while opening 303 stores in high-growth catchments (a net reduction of 222 stores to 19,947). Its registered customer base expanded 10% YoY to exceed 400 million. JioMart registered 42% YoY grocery B2C online growth with units per order up 24%, leaning on an expansive network of 5,000+ stores across 1,000+ towns. In electronics, like-for-like sales grew 8% with distribution revenue rising 20%, while Fashion & Lifestyle expanded its high-margin own-brand contribution by 710 bps. Analysts maintain that with fixed store costs already absorbing delivery infrastructure, the retail engine will drive considerable margin recovery as festive sales surge.
