Bongaigaon Celebrates National Sports Day with Sports, Fitness and Community Participation

Kokrajhar, 29 August 2026: NTPC Bongaigaon celebrated National Sports Day 2026 with a series of sporting activities bringing together employees, family members, township residents and local youth in a vibrant celebration of fitness, teamwork and sporting spirit.

Organised by the NTPC Bongaigaon Sports Council, the celebrations featured an Athletics Meet comprising track races and field events, including long jump and high jump, a cycle race and swimming competitions. Residents of the NTPC Bongaigaon Township across different age groups participated enthusiastically in the events.

The programme commenced with floral tributes to Major Dhyan Chand, the legendary Indian hockey player whose birth anniversary is commemorated as National Sports Day. Shri Anurag Gupta, GM (O&M), NTPC Bongaigaon, and Smt. Kasturi Maitra, President, Bardwi Shikla Ladies Club, NTPC Bongaigaon, paid tributes to the sporting icon.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Anurag Gupta highlighted the importance of making sports and physical fitness an integral part of everyday life. Remembering the sporting legacy of Major Dhyan Chand, he said that National Sports Day provides an opportunity to inspire people across generations to embrace an active lifestyle. He appreciated the enthusiastic participation of employees, family members, township residents and local youth, adding that sports foster discipline, teamwork, resilience and a strong sense of community.

The celebrations were also attended by Shri Bonthu Balaji, President, Sports Council, NTPC Bongaigaon; Shri Souvik Sen, General Secretary, Sports Council, NTPC Bongaigaon; and Ms. Debaleena Das, DGM (HR), along with employees, family members and sports enthusiasts.

Adding a distinct Kokrajhar flavour to the celebrations, a football match featuring local youth and “Power Warriors”, a team supported by NTPC Bongaigaon under its CSR initiative in association with the Kokrajhar District Sports Association (KDSA), extended the spirit of National Sports Day beyond the township.

The initiative provided a platform for local footballing talent while reinforcing NTPC Bongaigaon’s endeavour to promote sports and youth development in neighbouring communities through its CSR interventions.

From the athletics track and swimming pool to cycling and the football field, National Sports Day at NTPC Bongaigaon brought together the township and the neighbouring community through a shared enthusiasm for sports, fitness and participation.
