Advised to Stay Alert Against ‘Digital Arrest’ Fraud
Badmal: With cybercrime and online fraud increasing day by day, a cyber awareness programme was organised today at the Badmal Police Station premises with the objective of educating senior citizens about the growing threat of cybercrime. The awareness meeting was held under the chairmanship of Badmal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Dilip Behera, where senior citizens were briefed in detail about various new methods being adopted by cyber fraudsters.
Special emphasis was laid on the ‘digital arrest’ scam, which is increasingly being used by cybercriminals. Fraudsters make phone calls posing as police officers, CBI or ED officials, or representatives of other government agencies. They frighten victims through video calls and falsely claim that they are involved in a legal case, subsequently demanding money to avoid arrest or legal action. Senior citizens were advised not to panic or be intimidated by such calls or video calls, but to disconnect immediately and inform the police about the incident.
During the programme, various aspects of cybercrime were discussed. Senior citizens were cautioned against sharing OTPs, ATM/debit card details, bank account information, passwords, or other personal information with strangers. They were also advised not to click on suspicious links, download unknown applications, or share personal information carelessly on social media.
As senior citizens are often considered potential targets of cyber fraud, they were advised not to immediately trust unknown phone calls, messages, emails, or online offers. Even if someone calls claiming to represent a bank or government institution, they should verify the person’s identity before carrying out any financial transaction.
The programme also stressed the importance of promptly informing the concerned authorities if one becomes a victim of cyber fraud, without panicking. Participants were encouraged to adopt safe digital practices and spread awareness about cyber fraud among their family members and acquaintances.
A large number of senior citizens from Sapada, Tareikela, Hirma, Sripura, Tumbekela and Badmal areas under the jurisdiction of Badmal Police Station attended the awareness programme. Special emphasis was placed on remaining alert and vigilant to protect themselves and their families from cybercrime.
At a time when the use of online services is rapidly increasing in the digital age, such awareness programmes are expected to play an important role in educating the public about cybercrime and helping people protect themselves from online fraud, participants observed.
