Double Engine Government is Exploiting People by Increasing Prices of Petrol, Diesel and Cooking Gas: BJD
- While crude oil prices are declining internationally, the government has increased prices and is functioning like the British Raj.
- The government’s increase in fuel and cooking gas prices is like adding insult to injury for the people already burdened by inflation.
- The government should bring petrol and diesel under GST and provide relief to the common people from rising prices.
Bhubaneswar, 08/06/2026: Expressing concern over the continuous rise in the prices of petrol, diesel, cooking gas and other essential commodities despite a decline in international crude oil prices, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) strongly criticized the double engine government.
Addressing a press conference held today at Sankha Bhawan, Biju Mahila Janata Dal President Smt. SnehanginiChhuria stated that the price of domestic LPG cylinders has doubled over the past few years. In 2014, the price of a domestic LPG cylinder was around ₹415, whereas it has now reached ₹968. Similarly, the prices of petrol, diesel and commercial gas cylinders have also increased abnormally, putting tremendous pressure on the household budgets of ordinary people. She strongly condemned the government for this situation.
Smt. SnehanginiChhuria said that the rising prices are severely affecting lower and middle-income families, small traders, tea stall owners and hotel businesses. The continuous increase in cooking gas prices has made it extremely difficult for ordinary families to manage their household expenses. Despite the fall in crude oil prices in the international market, the benefits are not being passed on to the common people. She urged the Central Government to reduce the excessive taxes imposed on petrol and diesel and show sensitivity towards the common people who are suffering due to inflation. She further demanded that petrol and diesel be brought under the GST regime, which would help reduce fuel prices and lessen the financial burden on the people.
Smt. Chhuria further stated that incidents of violence against women have been increasing steadily under the BJP government. Cases of rape, gang rape and atrocities against women are rising at an alarming rate in the state, while the government remains a silent spectator. The government has completely turned a blind eye to the safety and security of women. Ensuring the safety of women and providing justice is the primary responsibility of the government, but instead of fulfilling this responsibility, the government is busy celebrating festivals and events. She demanded that the state government reduce the prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas to ease the financial burden on the common people.
Former MP Smt. Rajashree Mallick, Biju Mahila Janata Dal Vice-President and Corporator Smt. Pritinanda Rautaray, and Vice-President and Corporator Smt. Manasi Sundararay were present at the BJD press conference.
