Krushibhawan, architectural marvel of Odisha, inspired by the distinctive SamabalpuriIkat design saree has featured in an international architecture magazine, Deezen.
Bhubaneswar(Kalinga Voice) : A rare accolade this time for for the architectural design of a government building or facility of odisha . Krushi Bhawan has been featured by Dezeen. Popular Magazine Dezeen has given a wide coverage on Krushi Bhawan & featured its inclusive architecture & expressive cultural heritage. Krushi Bhawan, designed by Studio Lotus & executed by IDCO, was inspired by Sambalpuri Ikat – a traditional dyeing technique. It is the 1st building from Odisha to be chronicled in this coveted architecture magazine. The intricate design resembling Sambalpuri Ikat weave is a testimony of Odisha’s rich legacy of empowering farmers.
Chief Minister Naveen Pattanayak in a tweet says “Glad to know that Krushi Bhawan, inspired by Sambalpuri Ikat has become Odisha’s first building to be listed for DezeenAwards2020 by widely acclaimed Dezeen .Constructed with prize money of KrishiKarmanAwards is symbolic of our farmer empowerment.”
Krushi Bhawan is a government facility that also accommodates spaces for community engagement and learning . The facility has been designed to transcend the typical closed-off office campus morphology by integrating governmental functions with direct community engagement and education.
Manifesting the idea of decentralized state power, Krushi Bhawan derives its visual identity from local materials and vernacular narratives, expressed in a manner that is responsive to the local climate.
The design integrates passive and low-tech climate control mechanisms, limiting mechanical air-conditioning to only 20 percent of the built spaces.
The building’s spatial programme engenders inclusivity and exemplifies how a government can facilitate patronage for regional craft and sustain indigenous communities and economies. This project has been longlisted in the civic building category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
