Jharsuguda: Behind every high-performing manufacturing system lies an extensive logistics network that keeps it in seamless motion, providing the ability to move vast volumes of raw materials anddeliver finished products on time and with precision. At Vedanta Aluminium, Jharsuguda, the world’s largest aluminium plant, logistics is engineered to sustain production at a mega scale, through a system designed to support continuous, high-volume operations. Each year, around 28 million tonnes of material, including raw inputs such as Coal, alumina& CP-Coke and finished goods such asingots, billets, wire rod and slabs, and by-products – Flyash, moves through a tightly integrated logistics network.

Rail forms the backbone of this system. Around 55 percent of all material to and from the plant is transported by rail, which is the most efficient and reliable mode for large-volume industrial logistics. It ensures steady flow, faster turnaround, and lower emissions per tonne, strengthening both operational efficiency and sustainability.

Over 5,000 railway rakes were handled in FY26by Vedanta Aluminium’s Jharsuguda plant, with nearly 500 rakes often managed within a single month during peak periods. This performance is enabled by a logistics ecosystem designed for continuity at scale. Connected to key railway divisions& Zones such as Sambalpur/ECoR, Chakradharpur/SER, Bilaspur/SECRand various parts of Indian Railways across country therebymaking it the largest freight customer of Indian Railways in the Eastern India. The plant’s network integrates two dedicated Railway sidings, in-house locomotives, In-House loco & wagon maintenance shed, CC-Examination facility and specialised own rakes fleet to carry Alumina & Coal into a coordinated system.

Beyond rail, Vedanta Aluminium’s logistics strength extends into maritime trade. At Paradip, Vizag, Calcutta & JNPT ports in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal & Maharashtra, the company operates a highly efficient export channel that enables it to serve customers in over 60 countries, emerging as the largest container cargo exporter from these ports.

Together, these capabilities reflect a deeply integrated logistics ecosystem that connects production to both domestic and global markets via rail, road and sea, while also contributing significantly to Odisha’s economy through employment generation, logistics services, and allied industrial activity across transport corridors, port infrastructure, and surrounding regions.

Speaking about the scale of operations, Mr. C. Chandru, CEO – Vedanta Aluminium, Jharsuguda, said, “At Vedanta Aluminium, we are continuously strengthening our logistics and infrastructure capabilities to support the efficient, reliable, and sustainable movement of materials at scale. Our integrated, rail-led logistics network plays a critical role in enhancing operational efficiency, improving turnaround times, and reducing environmental impact. As one of the world’s leading aluminium producers supplying to more than 60 countries, building future-ready and sustainable supply chain systems is central to our ability to consistently serve global customers while advancing our long-term sustainability goals.”

Aluminium has become increasingly important to renewable energy systems, electric mobility, transportation, and advanced manufacturing. In this context, Vedanta Aluminium, Jharsuguda plays a critical role in ensuring a steady, large-scale supply of metal to sectors where reliability, consistency, and timely delivery are as essential as production is of utmost importance for nations growth.

This focus on operational excellence is also complemented by a continuous commitment to safety. In FY26, Vedanta Jharsuguda conducted initiatives such as ‘’Suraksha Sampark, VideoSOP’s and Stringent SOP’s’’ in collaboration with major operators, Indian Railways and experts to strengthen awareness and safe practices in railway operations. These initiatives focus on safe rake movement, close coordination across teams, and reinforcing a safety-first culture across the logistics network.

This system is also driven by its people. Vedanta’s all-women locomotive team plays a key role in managing in-plant rail movement and ensuring seamless coordination with external logistics operations. Here, logistics is defined by scale, precision, and continuity, enabling Vedanta Aluminium to power industries that are shaping global growth.
