Bhubaneswar, Oct. 16: The importance of early bedside diagnosis, interdisciplinary communication and timely intervention came to the fore when pediatricians at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital here battled to successfully revive a new-born baby suffering from multiple complications.
The baby, delivered at Khurda, had developed respiratory distress only eight hours after birth and was brought to IMS and SUM Hospital for treatment.
After being admitted into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the hospital, the baby developed shock and exhibited low blood pressure requiring multiple drugs for stabilising blood pressure. A 2D Echocardiography performed on the baby revealed poor cardiac contraction and critical aortic stenosis.
Urgent cardiology opinion was sought after which a balloon valvotomy was conducted after which the baby’s condition showed improvement. The baby was extubated to room air and discharged after two weeks of hospital stay.
