Green mineral corridor and prioritising Odisha bauxite mineral belt Praised.
Kashipur : A piece of joyful news has emerged for the people associated with the Kodingamali bauxite mine located in the Laxmipur and Kashipur blocks of Rayagada and Koraput districts, as well as the Aditya Alumina Refinery project at Kansariguda. The local community has wholeheartedly welcomed the Odisha Government’s decision to keep the production capacity of the Kodingamali bauxite mine at the existing 3.00 MTPA, instead of increasing it to 6.00 MTPA proposed by Odisha Mining Corporation Limited (OMC).
By respecting public opinion and deciding not to proceed with mine expansion, the government has demonstrated its commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development. The current production capacity of 3.00 MTPA is sufficient to supply bauxite to the Aditya Alumina Refinery for 15 years or more, ensuring sustainable mining practices, reduced pollution, clean logistics, and community-centric development.
Limiting bauxite production will result in lower waste generation, more efficient use of resources, and reduced environmental impact. At the same time, it will help sustain long-term employment and enhance economic opportunities for the local population.
The local community has also appreciated the Central Government’s budgetary allocation for the Green Mineral Corridor. This initiative will provide direction for environmentally responsible mining, transportation, processing, and value addition.
In the Aditya Alumina Refinery project, Hindalco’s initiative to transport bauxite through ropeway and Long-Distance Conveyor (LDC) systems will serve as a benchmark for green logistics. Compared to road transport, this system will reduce carbon emissions by 60–70 percent, while also lowering traffic congestion and pollution.
In addition, through CSR initiatives, local people are being supported through education, healthcare, skill development, and employment opportunities. Initiatives such as the Aditya Birla Public School, health camps, free medicines, and training programs are empowering the local community.
During the press meeting, a request was made to the government to grant Displaced Person (DP) status to the residents of Biriguda Colony. There was also a demand to encourage industries to adopt sustainable transportation systems such as railways and conveyor systems instead of conventional road transport.
Overall, the decision not to expand the Kodingamali mine and the implementation of the Green Mineral Corridor mark a new direction for sustainable mining, a healthier environment, and community-focused development in Odisha.
