DOCTORS NEED TO TREAT PATIENTS WITH GREATER EMPATHY: SOA VICE-PRESIDENT

Bhubaneswar, July 2: Patients, praying for a cure of their ailment, pin their hopes on the knowledge, skill and experience of doctors while elevating them to near-divine status. It reflects the immense public trust placed in the medical professionals whose sacrifices are also acknowledged, Ms. Saswati Das, Vice-President of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA), said on Wednesday.

Decisions taken by doctor’s everyday impact patients and their families greatly and this should prod the medical professionals to treat people with greater empathy, Ms. Das said while addressing a Doctor’s Day program held at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital here.

She said that doctors at the IMS and SUM Hospital had earned a reputation for their expertise while wishing them greater success on their special day.

Prof. (Dr.) Ashok Kumar Mahapatra, eminent neurosurgeon and SOA’s Principal Advisor (Health Sciences), who attended the program as the honoured guest, said that he hoped that IMS and SUM Hospital would be counted among the top ten hospitals in the country in the future.

Prof. (Dr.) Sanghamitra Mishra, Dean of IMS and SUM Hospital-1, said that the Doctor’s Day is observed to mark the birth day of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, a renowned physician who also served as Chief Minister of West Bengal. The program was also addressed by Prof. (Dr.) Pushparaj Samantasinghar, Medical Superintendent of IMS and SUM Hospital-1, Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Kumar Jena, Additional Dean of the institute, Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Kumar Lenka, Medical Superintendent of IMS and SUM Hospital-2, Phulnakhara.

Around 35 doctors and departmental heads, chosen by students, were felicitated on the occasion by the Vice-President. A cultural program was also staged on the occasion.
